Greyhound Inn Whitchurch - window refurbishment

Pub window refurbishment
Pub window refurbishment

I have been working on a refurbishment of the original leadlight windows in the Greyhound Inn, Whitchurch - which is being beautifully restored to its former glory by AtWill pubs (www.atwillpubs.com/)

The windows have 9 panels of clear hammered glass with a hammered light amber border; I have re-used the originals where possible – although during the restoration I found some of the panels were actually Perspex! To create a more interesting effect I have used a mixture of two similar but subtly different sizes of hammered glass.

Half inch round lead was used to make the windows – I have also used silver coated copper wire to attach the windows to the re-enforcement bars (on the inside) as they look a bit better than the copper ones.

More photos of how I made the windows to follow.

I am thinking of doing a presentation of how I made the windows – the techniques used to cut glass, lead and then the processes to finally finish the windows ready for installation -  perhaps with a small live demonstration of some of the processes. I will speak to the AtWill managers to see if we can host it in the pub once it has opened?

Let me know if you would be interested in attending this?

That’s all now; I have a few craft fairs to attend in the end of November as I fancy a break from the ‘big stuff’ for a while.

Christmas glass bits....

Christmas 'parcel' approx 2" square.
Christmas 'parcel' approx 2" square.

With Christmas rapidly approaching, I am making some tree decorations that will be on sale at Blakemere from 23/11/13.

They start with handmade 'Christmas parcels' made of four glass panels approx 1 " square; they are either coloured or clear textured. They are each topped with a 'bow' made from silver-coated copper wire that allows them to be hung on your Christmas tree, refracting light beautifully.

Each one is unique and of course handmade in Moulton, Cheshire.

They are on sale for £5.50 each, 2 for £10 or 5 for £20.

Glass demo

Today I gave a demonstration of glass techniques to a arts and crafts group in North Wales; we covered the basics starting with a presentation with a few slides on how glass was made, the history of stained glass and explained some of the terminology.

I then gave a practical demo of cutting glass - straight lines to curves, copper foiling and soldering. There were about 20 people at the demo and most had an opportunity to cut some glass themselves and have a go with the copper foiling machine. As a group, we prepared a small light catcher, which after a soldering looked very impressive - all made in less than an hour.

Then it was on to using lead came, I showed how lead can be temperamental to cut and loses its shape easily; then a soldering demo of how easy it is to melt lead if you are not paying attention!

Everyone seemed to enjoy the morning and I hope to see them again.

I will be starting providing some glass courses either at my workshop or to groups in the near future, so watch the website as I will have a new glass lessons tab soon.
